Traumatic events leave<br>emotional scars as well as physical ones. The absence<br>of love causes lasting psychological pain. A damaged<br>child learns to be wary of attachments because:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong>Love is conditional (manipulation)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong>Love makes you weak and vulnerable<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong>Love must be searched for and can be lost<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong>Love hurts but emotions need to be hidden.<\/strong><br><strong>Many of us have had bad childhood experiences<br>that still affect us. The way they have influenced<br>our attitudes to life may be small \u2013 or large: Don\u2019t<br>do that, you\u2019re not clever enough to try or don\u2019t say<br>what you really think \u2013 it\u2019ll get you into<br>trouble. Addiction is often rooted in attachment<br>problems. Do I recognise the suffering of<br>my inner child and see there is more work to do?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong><br>Past suffering remains a measure of who we are, a<br>characteristic of our inner child. To comfort this<br>child, we must understand suffering, because some<br>good may come of it in the end. This can seem<br>contradictory but is often a theme of religious<br>teaching.
