Remember Mindfulness – sit comfortably
But for the grace of God
When we see a person struggling with addiction, we
should offer help. We should also remind ourselves
that, but for the grace of God, we could be in exactly
the same state ourselves. This is not just a pious
thought; reminding ourselves of our past with all its
horrors can be a powerful weapon in recovery.
Complacency in recovery can lead us to cut corners
and minimise potential dangers. It can sometimes
go unnoticed for a long time. These ‘but for the
grace of God’ moments are reality checks. Do I try
to avoid complacency?
Complacency goes with arrogance. It is difficult for
an arrogant person to sincerely say: There but for the
grace of God go I. It is also difficult for an arrogant
person to let go of resentments. Clearly, if there is
arrogance within me, then my recovery is going to
be in danger. Humility itself can seem like a
relatively lightweight attribute when compared to
say, courage or honesty. But its true importance lies
in its power to overcome the toxic effects of my
inflated ego. I ask today that I may constantly seek
humility and make choices on the basis of humility.
