The Power to be myself
Why would you want to be something you are not, when you could be better, just by being yourself? Being yourself is a continuous effort. There is always another expectation placed upon you, another person pulling you toward their preferences, another nudge from society to act a certain way. It’s a daily battle to be yourself rather than what the world wants you to be. Such a fundamental issue as this – the way that we see ourselves, requires constant attention especially for those in recovery from addiction. But if we succeed, our self-esteem will rise accordingly. Can I be myself?
Remember the pressures that are put upon us – be who you are, be true to yourself. I very much like the Gestalt Prayer by psychologist Fritz Perls:
I do my thing
And you do your thing.
I am not in this world
To live up to your expectations
And you are not in this world
To live up to mine.
You are you and I am I.
And if by chance
We find each other, it’s beautiful,
If not, it can’t be helped.
