Remember Mindfulness – review expectations
Leap of faith
A newly sober person is like a prisoner, released after
a long solitary confinement. The idea of freedom is
exciting, but he is still fearful to come out of his cell
because he’s forgotten what the world is like. He
doesn’t know how people will view him – perhaps
they will reject him. He knows how that feels. Very
carefully, he takes a few steps outside. Will he be
himself and face reality or will he slink in the
shadows, afraid of the consequences? It is a crucial
moment. Am I ready to leave the shadows and be
where I belong?
Taking a leap of faith is always a challenge. Perhaps
that is the reason why the ‘Promises’, in the AA Big
Book, are so well known. There is no mention of
addiction in these promises because our new life has
no need for it. Any person, addicted or not, could
hardly fail to find them an inspiring and highly
desirable set of goals. Yet they are very achievable
for anyone prepared to work the Twelve Steps with
honesty, openness, and willingness to change. Today
I ask for the confidence of doing what is right, so
that I may live a life of belonging described in the
promises.
